Are They On A Different Shelf

This weekend, I watched some “gay” cinema. I put the word gay in quotes, because I’ve come to the conclusion that art should not be categorized. The story lines were after all human–love, loss of love, falling in love, personal gain and loss. The characters just happened to be homosexual.

I wondered why we don’t have prominently gay actors or movies with a dominant gay themes out for the masses to watch. There were some really good movies, with good scripts. Likewise, there were also a share of cheese and D rated flicks.

I know that there are many gay directors, producers and out actors. There should be more representation. Or are these movies/novels/television shows already out there and I’m just unable to find them.

You can only find them from small studios. The major ones only make a comedy or, which is even worse, the fun of us aka typecasting.

    “The Women” counts.

This was my take on the subject; it’s a little out of date, and we’ve seen some good ones lately; we particularly recommend the Canadian movie “C.R.A.Z.Y.” Maybe I’ll do another post and bring things up to date. In the meantime: http://trollatsea.blogspot.com/2008/06/accentuate-positive.html

Ain’t it the truth! What we see as “no so different” is for others so shocking. We’ve been dealing with/living with being gay. To so many, we don’t exist because we hide too much.

More media exposure would be a boost. And, we have to be OUT there for others to see us. Though I’ve come a long way, the risk scares me still.

there are lots of movies like this – heteros are not interested in seeing them, that’s all.
